Maculate Conception - 8/20/02

Dear Bel,

My girlfriend and I have argued much about a current event and I thought about asking you for your input. I am a psychiatrist, 45 years of age, and consider myself a man of science. My girlfriend, for the last 2 years, is a chemist and something of an expert in that field. She believes that for every question there is an answer and that it is measurable. I tend to believe the truth can at times be poisoned through the use of numbers, especially where something as complex as human behavior is concerned.

In the news we discovered that apparently there is a requirement on Florida women who do not wish to have an abortion, but instead wish to place their child up for adoption, that compels them to run an advertisement containing their name, sexual activity, and partners at the time of conception. While I feel outrage, my girlfriend feels that these women deserve the humiliation. It has been a week and we still cannot resolve this debate between us. Witch one of us to do you agree with?

Ah yes. Making young women into hors and then making them feel awful about it is a time-honored tradition predating the Florida law so don't blame Florida. Why is it that you and your girlfriend have to agree? Intellectual diversity should be cherished, not oppressed. Just because I agree with one side more than the other doesn't make one more right.

With that said. Publish your girlfriend's sexual history, or lack thereof in the local paper. See if her position changes. Also, put one in the paper for yourself. Just for kicks, I will put one in for Bob, Jerome, Stephen, Melissa, and myself and ask people send me an email if they don't approve. Maybe then they'll pass a law forbidding such racy ads.

COMING NEXT: I don't know what you did last fall.

Email Bel!
