Hoggs Corner, KS 8/3/04
I had to show my press credentials to Chief Hank Fitch who heads the two-man police force in this remote cornbelt
town, population 305.
"We can't be too careful!" said Fitch, as we had donuts and coffee at Ma's Diner.
" For all I know, your name could be Ali or something," he said, as his cold blue eyes carefully looked
me over.
I asked the chief how he is preparing against an attack on his town, in view of the latest alert.
" Well, for one, the people agreed that our 1983 Yugo police car is getting a bit outdated and voted we could
update it. Ben at Klassy Used Kars may give us a good price on a replacement." said the Chief, as sipped his
coffee. " Also, I'm thinking of retiring officer Kronk. At 87, he ain't as alert as he should be. ....need
someone younger."
I jotted his answers down in my notebook." Chief, what's some likely targets here?"
"Well, we got Happy Sunset Nursing Home, the church, Sandy's Bar and Grill, Ma's Diner here...all possible
targets. We issued a preparedness bulletin to the people here. Sleep nights in your tornado shelter. stock up on
grits, beans,...buy a good Chinese flashlight and portable radio, make sure your shotgun is loaded with 12 gauge
doubleOO buckshot and close at hand...shoot first and ask questions after! That might be an Ell-Kayda prowling
around your barn!. He glanced suspiciously at a Greyhound bus at it roared past.
" Gotta patrol," he said as he ended the interview. As he rose from his chair, his gun fell from his
holster and hit the floor. It was a rusty WWII 32.cal. S&W. The cylinder flew open and a moldy, green cartridge
rolled on the floor.
"Yep, gotta be prepared." he said, as he replaced his weapon in the holster. The three stars on his epaulet
gleamed brightly as he sauntered through the door and onto the dusty street.

What separates the great thinkers of history from the rest of us? What is the difference between Joe from across
the street and the great Aristotle? Is it brain power, your upbringing, eduacation, or is it something esle? The
answer is not as hard as one might think.....
Now think with me for a moment, imagine your daily routine; wake up, eat, work, and sleep,then the cycle starts
all over again. Seldom is there any free time, and when there is we fill it up with mindless activities, like television
or games. When do we have time for thoughts and ideas?
What about books, or the news, you may ask. We get ideas from those don't we? But whos ideas are they? Not ours.
So I ask again, what separates the average person from the world's elite thinkers? Do you know? It is the person
themself, and how the use their time.....
Thomas Edison didn't come up with hundreds of inventions by accident; no he spent time thinking about each one.
He even started an "invention factory" where he paid people to think!
So over the course of a day when you have that precious free time, don't waste it, use it to think. Think about
anything; politics, war, family problems, just for five minutes. Your brain can accomplish a lot in five minutes.
Remember the only thing that controls who we are and what we are capable of doing is ourselves.
So next time when you have a minute us it to think. Try it.
You will surprise yourself.
