Ask me a damn Question!!!

Song in my head:
"They go to church to make a date with the neighbor's wife,
youuuuuuu bett-a leave that woman alone..."
- Moby -

Cranky Mr. Scoggins writes:
I get treated like shit to but thats OK because I'm white? Its not your skin color it
maybe to few people working in the store. I guess he treated you like you did the guy on the phone.

My reply:
If you haven't memorized every column I have written, Mr. Scoggins is referring to the
08/07/03 column. In this case I went to the same store, which appeared to only employ white folks, 4 different times and was treated like crap. When I went to the same chain in a black neighborhood, with mostly minority folk working, I had a totally different experience. Both stores were busy. Maybe black people just make better employees. But I don't think so, people are people.

It appears Mr. Scoggins saw a
"race thang," and immediately claims I'm pulling the race card.

This is reminiscent of I guy tolerated at work. During break we had a TV with CNN playing. In one of many instances, we saw a news story with a black person and first thing out of his mouth was, "Damn...that's just what I'm takin' about, it's always the niggers causin' the trouble." (Apparently he choose to ignore the other crime stories with white folks.)

When I told him his frequent use of the word "Nigger" was offensive to me, he jumps up and points his finger at me..."He's pulling the race card! He's pulling the race card!"

He felt it was his right as an American to call anyone anything. To an extent he's right, America does extend that freedom of speech. But fact remains if he wasn't a bigot jerk, he would just be more respectful of others.

In Nebraska, racism is a way of life...it's just the way it is. I don't picket stores and try to get law passed and make a big stink. My immediate reaction is, just don't give prejudice people my money. Pretty simple really. If some white folks are so stupid that they would rather loose money to support their hate...then I say cool, I'll give my money to a brotha'.

Employment is the same thing. In NE, my chances of getting an interview from a resume are probably 60% less than white folk (Hispanic last name). Out of the interviews received, I'd estimate 25% wouldn't hire me based on race.

To me, the immediate solution isn't picketing, passing laws, and so on and so forth. The solution is to distribute 85% more résumé's than the average white person. So when I was looking for a job, folks I went to college with sent out about 30 résumé's before they got a job (not necessarily a great job...folks probably have to send out more these days).

I just planned on sending out around 56 resumes to companies that were hiring before I expected to get an offer, 85% of 30 = 25.5, 26 + 30 = 56. It's a numbers game you can play if you know what the numbers are. So when I got my 43rd rejection, I wasn't disappointed...I knew I still had more to send.

Otherwise I could have sent out 35 resumes, never get a job, and end up working at Burger Haven.

So you see Mr. Scoggins, perhaps you can afford to ignore racism, but recognizing racism is important to a minority person, because we have to compensate to survive. Of course if your the owner of a business who chases minorities out of your store, and your going out of business...perhaps you can't afford it either.

Coming Next: I get my buzz back!!!
